As always, your textbook is a great resource (Chapter 4). In addition, the resources below have been included to assist you in your research:
- How did the First Nations, French and British peoples interact with each other as participants in the fur trade?
- How did the fur trade contribute to the foundations of the economy in North America?
Goal:
- Your task is to choose one of the questions above and prepare a presentation for your peers.
- Your goal is to answer the question in enough detail that your peers will be able to complete the information retrieval page provided to them.
- The challenge is to present your topic in a creative and engaging manner.
- One obstacle to overcome will be the competition you will encounter from other pairs presenting on the same topic as you.
Role:
- You are partner teachers trying to teach your students the answer to one of the above questions.
- You have been asked to prepare a visual representation and oral presentation of your research findings.
Audience:
- The target audience is your students.
- Your need to teach them enough facts about your chosen question that they could answer this question in a well-written paragraph.
Situation:
- The context you find yourself in is in front of a classroom teaching to a group of students.
- Your visual representation must be on display, but you must not completely rely on this to guide your presentation.
- No reading right off the screen!

The Role of the Church in New France
Using the links below, please research the role of the church in New France. Then, using the graphic organizer provided, complete your assigned task: What were the three most important roles of the church in New France?
I CAN...
YOUR TASK:
Mahatma Gandhi is a revolutionary leader of change and is considered a hero to many. He led by example and fought for the basic human rights of his fellow countrymen and women. The British military fought against Gandhi’s peaceful demonstrations with violent methods; they did not agree with his beliefs and values. Although Gandhi was imprisoned for his actions, many people were inspired by him and followed in his footsteps. Gandhi’s actions and leadership have encouraged many of the freedoms people of India enjoy today.
VOCABULARY:
Support: to agree with or approve of something.
Condemn: to say in a strong and definite way that someone or something is bad or wrong.
Imperialism: the practice of a larger country or government growing stronger by taking over poorer or weaker countries that have important resources.
Please see the exemplars in class for possible ideas to help you create your visual
- I can identify the social and economic factors of European imperialism
- I can identify the key figures in the French and British exploration and settlement of North America.
- I can explain three ways in which European imperialism had an impact on Aboriginal societies
YOUR TASK:
- Choose an explorer – Cartier, Champlain, Cabot
- Research your choice – who was this guy? What made him want to explore? What kinds of things did he do?
- Create a visual – I.e. Wanted Poster, Advertisement, Welcome Home sign, Party Invite, Picket sign, Trading card etc. (see below)
- Provide a rationale (a reason) on your visual display that explains why Europe would support the actions of this explorer (think imperialistic values)
- On the other side of your visual, explain why a First Nations group would condemn those same actions.
- Write a paragraph using a topic sentence, 2 – 3 concise supporting details and a concluding sentence. This paragraph should explain why you feel that the figure you chose is a hero or villain, and why you made the choices you did in the assignment. Here is an example:

Comparing the Diverse Social & Economic Structures Within the Societies of Aboriginal Peoples
We are about to begin a weeklong exploration into the Mi’kmaq, Haudenosaunee and Anishinabe tribes.
In groups of three, you will travel around to four different locations to complete the tasks listed below. Each member of your group will be responsible for ensuring the quality of work for one tribe is completed to exemplary standards at each station.
For each task, you are to check in with the teacher to ensure you are aware of what needs to be completed at each stage. The teacher will instruct if you are to “divide and conquer” the work or “work as a collective”. The locations for each task and primary teacher for instruction have been listed below. However, if that teacher is not available, you can ask any teacher who is.
Once you are completed a task, you must get a teacher’s signature before moving on.
